Transcript

Brené Brown: Hi, everyone. I’m Brené Brown, and welcome to my new Dare to Lead podcast on Spotify. We are in our 10th year of a study on the future of leadership, and the big finding is that courage is teachable, observable, and measurable.

BB: Courage is actually a collection of four skill sets, and those skill sets are the foundation of this podcast. First skill set, how do we learn how to rumble with vulnerability? How do we lean into uncertainty, tough conversations, difficult feedback, hard decisions? How do we lean in rather than tapping out? Second skill set, how do we live into our values, I mean actually practice them, not just profess them? Third, how do we talk about trust and build trust with our teams, with our colleagues, and how do we build trust within ourselves? Self-trust is a non-negotiable for leading. And last, the fourth skill set of courage, how do we reset after setbacks, failures, and disappointments? Look, we have to know how to do this because innovation and creativity don’t exist without failure and setback.

BB: We’ll unpack these skill sets of courage building by talking to researchers, talking to leaders who are actually walking the talk, and, you know me, by asking a lot of questions. Leadership is not about corner offices or titles. I define a leader as anyone who holds themselves accountable for finding the potential in people and processes, and who has the courage to develop that potential.

BB: The Dare to Lead podcast will be a mix of solo episodes and conversations with change-catalysts, culture-shifters, and as many troublemakers as possible. Innovating, creating, and building a better, more just world requires daring leadership in every part of our daily lives – from work to home to community. Together, we’ll have the conversations that help us show up, step up, and dare to lead.
